What are fact families?

A fact family is a group of 4 number sentences that all go together. For example, I could make a fact family out of the numbers 4, 6, and 10. There are only four ways for 4, 6, and 10 to fit together:

4+6=10
6+4=10
10-4=6
10-6=4
